The Huntsville Association for Pastoral Care (HAPC) was founded in 1977 through a joint effort of clergy, medical professionals and local congregations. It is an organization composed of representatives from many Christian denominations and also healing and helping professionals. Its mission it to initiate and support Chaplaincy programs; to offer education and encouragement for Chaplains, pastors and lay ministers; and to stimulate growth in community pastoral care and counseling. This “Network of Caring” works in the development and ongoing support of chaplaincy programs (currently linked with ten chaplain programs); sponsors educational programs (including Project Dialogue Community Forums, co-sponsored public forums, “Religion and Psychology” discussions, training programs offered to area ministerial, and the School for Applied Ministry); and coordinates of the countywide Pastoral Care Day in October. HAPC served as served as the catalyst for the Huntsville Hospital Department of Pastoral Care, for the Vine Pastoral Counseling Center, for the formation of the Council for Faith and Mental Illness, for and the birthing and development of the North Alabama Parish Nursing Initiative, and more recently the Madison County Coalition for Healthy Marriages.
